As a long-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and S&C coach to some of the best grapplers in the world, I have first-hand experience of how improved physical attributes from strength and conditioning can complement your technical skills in BJJ, making you a more well-rounded athlete.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) strength and conditioning training is essential for improving performance and reducing injury risk on the mats. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about Mat Strong - our top-rated BJJ strength and conditioning program.

  • Mat Strong program aims to increase your strength and conditioning to enhance your athletic performance.

    This online program should be run alongside adequate nutrition (calories and protein on point) and quality sleep (7-9 hours).

    This is a subscription-based monthly program that will continue unless you decide to cancel. Understand that to get good results, it will take 6-12 months of consistent training.

    You are free to cancel at any time. We recommend starting this program only if you are serious about getting results for a minimum of 6 months.

    • 2-3 x Strength sessions with video demonstrations for technique guidance each week, including warm-ups, plyometrics, and strength work

    • 2 x Optional conditioning sessions - a chance to improve your overall conditioning and ability to recover between rounds - this should only be done if you feel you can manage your fatigue from jiu-jitsu (hence optional)

    • 1-2 x Mobility work: You'll find 2 structured mobility sessions each week, a great opportunity to improve mobility in your hips, shoulders, and back.

    • Ability to give feedback and record each session on the app.

  • Take advantage of sending questions and posting in the online community chat. Charles will be able to answer any questions from this group regarding strength/nutrition and some technique breakdowns.

  • Yes, you should have access to the following gym equipment:

    • Barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, pull-up bars, bands, an ab wheel

    • Conditioning equipment: ski ergs, rower, air dyne, bike (only one of the following is required)

  • No, on this program, you won't be able to customize the option, but you will be able to make up any sessions that are missed at any time that suits your schedule.

  • Definitely. This program is designed to complement and improve your BJJ training.

  • Once you join the program you will be sent a welcome message containing links to videos that will break:

    • How the program works

    • How RPE works

    • Technique breakdowns for the big lifts

  • I will be changing the program every 4 weeks as it gives us some variety, this is not necessary to make gains in the gym however I found that online programming helps adherence and makes things more interesting for those on board. Youll notice that we don't make drastic changes. Any changes could be a slight variation difference in the angle/exercise or sets/reps or tempo we use.
